Primary weapons damn near fully resupply from ammo boxes. One is enough to top you up most of the time. Two will do it if you're near empty. The RR barely gets any ammo from ordinary POI ammo boxes. With a quasar cannon you don't care if some idiot wasted the resupply in the middle of nowhere because it's easy to keep your primary weapon topped up at POIs and your AT weapon doesn't need a supply crate to stay fed.
Also, while I'm not advocating to get killed, in a worst case scenario your primary weapon gets resupplyed when you die and respawn. A quick corpse run to the quasar and you're back at 100%. In contrast a corpse run to an empty RR still just nets you an empty RR.
