It has delved into Science Fantasy since really long ago man. Mechanical enhancements and super weapons were around for long, laws against robots to avoid a machine uprising like the Sentients from Warframe, the First Descent even happened during the final of the Valkyrie Games were women were duking out like gladiators with explosive weapons.
The government just repurposed those sportswomen and sociopathic researchers.
