Cold Steel had an interesting setting and lore but the character and plot writing was often utterly mediocre to outright bad. Calvard has one of the most uninteresting settings among all of JRPGs and the character writing is basically non-existent after the first game and the plot has absolutely no idea what it wants to be about whenever a sept-terrion isn't involved. I still find Cold Steel weaker than Sky and Crossbell but I get why people look back a bit more generously given how utterly empty Calvard. That's still not a reason to pretend like Cold Steel wasn't heavily flawed in many ways though as so often happens with this kind of Star Wars prequels esque revisionism.
