As stated, make a simple beginner game with the engine of your choice to get your feet wet. Then make a prototype or MVP(minimal viable product) of your actual starting project and if you do manage to "find the fun", make an actual game out of it. Otherwise keep looking. Mind that this project should still be something relatively small, something you can comfortably complete in under a year.
