My idea of darkness is just to play a horrific situation straight. Billions of people have been genocided, Humanity may not survive, the trilogy doesn't really focus on that too hard but Reach could have. The best level is New Alexandria because you get to see the massacre and try your best to stop it. I don't think it was done very well but I could feel what they were going for, lean into the desperation, the exhaustion of the troops fighting, the fear that you might not make it to the evacuation ship, the uncertainty of the future.
Reach starts in a boring grey mountain then goes to a boring cold military base, then a boring grey desert, when it should have started in the cities, you should have been there from the beginning and spent the whole game seeing the decline and destruction.
