I was disappointed by several things about his return, but they all come down to
>muh 1,000 years
Always hated this shit in fantasy. Him having been gone for a few decades would have already been impactful for a human audience. Telescoping that out to a millennium makes it difficult to take his characterization seriously. There's no fucking world in which he'd still care about Alliance vs Horde after spending 95% of his existence fighting against the Legion and liberating its victims. Hell, swapping him and Danath on that front would make more sense...

...which is a problem because he's THE missing hero of the Alliance, finally reunited with his old allies. And how did they show that? Slavish devotion to X'era and adoption of draenei culture (the former of which he conveniently forgot about as soon as Illidan was done having a moment). Another reason to cut down the millennium in length: that would have justified him still being in his honeymoon phase with X'era, but not so lost in the sauce that it isn't believable that he'd move on quickly once someone pointed out her flaws.

He basically doesn't feel like the same character--nor does he look the part, either, since he's still wearing armor so gaudy that nobody transmogs the equivalent player sets--which makes it all the more jarring that they're trying to lean so hard on WC2 for him in Midnight. Fuck, he should have trouble even remembering that shit at this point.
