Might be Kris's knife, as silly as that may sound. The knife seems to be a very personal object to Kris and probably one that brings comfort. So it taking the form of a shield in the dark world to provide protection makes sense to me.
Or maybe it's nothing and it's just an object Kris get conjure up in the dark world. For awhile there I thought the sword turns into the shield, but chapter 4 has that animation of Kris holding both the sword and shield at the same time.
