1. Have pets actually do something. Equipping something that is just visual noises and yaps at you will get old quick. Allow players to tell their companion to go search for supplies. They can produce the same stuff as hires, such as ammo or med-kits.
2. Give everyone a standard pet when they make an account so it's not "pay2win".
3. Add a toggle that allows people to view other players' pets in-game. Sweats will turn pets off but still use your new feature.
4. Look into a mode that's kind of like Monster Rancher with your pet. If you insist upon baiting people into buying numerous pets, involve them in a unique game mode. I'm not saying turn the game into a Michael Vick simulator, just some activities to do with the thing, like that old Pikachu buddy game.
