I don't think she would have kept their relationship going if he behaved differently. I think she liked the way he was (acting) because it fit her fantasy boyfriend and because of this (act) she thought he was good enough to iron out the problems. But her lack of experience meant the alarms didn't go off when he used her for sex and refused any form of commitment; instead she thought she could use the former to solve the latter which only seemed to make him worse.
She only looks back on it poorly in retrospect because of the experience she's gained, as a defence mechanism.
The phonecall yeah is resentment from being unintentionally forced to continue the relationship. I get the feeling though that the infamous "kick her teeth out" bit was actually to show that Julia loitering in his life had actually made her worth less to him than a stranger. An active problem he wanted to solve but there was too many strings attached to his own psyche.
