The United Star Systems Enterprise NCC-1701 D is a Galaxy Class Starship of the Federation of Planets that was in operation in the late 24th century for approximately 8 years until it was scuttled. The aft section suffered a warp core containment breach and detonated. The Saucer Section survived an emergency landing impact with significant damage. The Saucer section would later be restored under the stewardship of former Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge, largely replacing damaged aspects of the aft section with parts from the USS Syracuse.
Of the 3 Galaxy Class starships seen, all three suffered warp core breaches for various reasons. The USS Yamato, sister ship of the USS Enterprise and constructed at the same time, suffered from a computer virus after interacting directly with Iconian technology, causing a cascade failure across all computer controlled systems and finally the loss of warp containment. The USS Odyssey would participate in early skirmishes prior to the declaration of the Dominion War, and acquitted itself adequately in combat against the unknown force until the enemy merely chose to ram them in a suicide attack which would ultimately eliminate both sides of the conflict.
The Galaxy class cruiser was capable of separating it's saucer section to "Free itself of the bulk" of the saucer section, which was where almost all the living quarters and amenities were located. This included at least one zoo, one aquarium, one arboretum, one gymnasium, multiple bars, multiple schools from kindergarten through to high school, and lounges and an unknown number of Holodecks. The Aft section seemingly comprised mostly of offices, laboratories and main engineering. The aft section house most of the propulsion elements such as the primary impulse engine and warp nacelles, and although the saucer section could be safely deployed at warp speed, it was not warp capable on it's own.
