he wanted to add liquid heating and temperature regulation to the game so he could throw hot liquids over people to burn them, but then the liquids would cool back down to room temperature, expelling the heat into the air and his approach caused a lot of bugs in testing and it wasn't a feature that a lot of people were really keen on. lots of people saying do it this way, do it that way, don't add it at all, people finding insane bugs with it and then saying unmerge it until its all fixed. seemed to take the rejection personally and decided to make "/vg/ but in my image" because he also objected to a bunch of other features that had been added in the last few years. which is fine, but then joining some weird crusade against /vg/ because people didn't like your feature is very strange.
the lighting system was shifty and he never left because people didn't like it, he was just very defensive of it and spent a long time going back and making changes to it.
