No matter what you do it's never going to be the same community. Case in point is SS14 itself. It was originally supposed to be an open source clone of BYOND+SS13 but I don't think the current community even cares about the original goals anymore.
Old grogs will stick with what they're familiar with and what you'll get is the malcontents, the rejects and just new people eager to try something new.
