I guess the easiest place the start is with live on Day Break Games. Though this isn't really Everquest. It's more akin to a modern MMO than classic EQ. You'll start off with a tutorial in the Glooming Deep Mines, and then be deposited into a city where all races get along for some reason.
And this city doesn't feel like a city at all, it feels like a hub zone, because that's what it is. It exists to serve the player, not the world. It exists to serve the gameplay, not the world.
If you wait till they launch another Time Locked Progression server, that would be a great time to jump in. No gay ass retarded hub zones. Just you and your starting city. But they probably won't launch a new one until spring next year. Maybe the current one is still good?
Then there are emulator servers of which there are many. I'm currently playing on Solo quest mentioned earlier in the thread.
