About Ninetales being harsh, I thought that was normal for the character, being depicted as a vengeful and prideful kitsune, asserting dominance through speech. Although if the text is being consistent about switching between hiragana and katakana in regard to gender, I guess that would lean towards Ninetales being a male as you said.
