You see, I actually do get this, but it's clear that they wanted to both incorporated "stronger bite force" and "looks like Totodile" so they went with a middle ground option that uses visual and contextual tells to sell the former (Megas are stronger so obviously its "bites" would not be stronger, larger "jaws"=larger bite force, even if that isn't necessarily true) while incorporating the latter.
You're right in that it's obviously not the most EFFICIENT way to bit and obviously no actual animal would evolve to do it this way, but Megas are pretty explicitly an "unnatural" phenomenon that tends to exaggerate traits in ways that wouldn't be conducive to the Pokemon's actual means of survival for the sake of looking flashier or selling a theme (Glalie's broken maw, Manectric's giant thunderbolt fur, Slowbro's....everything kek).
