Because Taunie has clearly established up to that point that they're self-centred and care more about being the one to save people than actually saving people. The meta reasoning of course being that the plot doesn't work if the MC goes into the tower. And no the tower would have went out of control no matter what, all the 'strongest mega evolution user' was needed for was mega evolving Floette which they did.
