Honestly either or, gameplay-wise they're all pretty similar, maybe EoS if you aren't sure you'd commit to both. Super is good too, just kinda annoying storywise since they abandon like, the entire first half of the game's set up to go back to guild shit. GTI is considered the black sheep of the series because it cut down a ton of mechanics to try to make the game simpler, and it had a huge dex cut due to the 3D jump, but otherwise its fine. The big appeal of the series is the world and the characters, so you can't really go wrong with any of them.

I feel so bad for Lucario, being rejected by your family is awful, and I can't imagine the stoicism is purely from his pokemon side considering his pack mentality from earlier in the story when he thought of his parents. Hopefully the guy can get some more friends. Found-family can sometimes be better.
