I would be shocked if someone hadn't already figured out a format to neatly zip CDs for archival on hard disc and decompress them into memory for use by a VM or other application at runtime. The max 700 MB per CD image is a drop in the bucket when most people are rocking 16-32GB of RAM at a minimum these days, and for larger collections I'd argue any savings to disc space would greatly outweigh some small hit to CPU/RAM performance as the information is being retrieved.
