The issue is that Wizardry was always a garbage series. Like genuinely the only reason it ever was popular is because it was one of like 5 games you could play on a home computer back then that was more than an extremely basic arcade game or platformer. It has always been shit and even the better later titles were absolutely devastated by any other title. I will give them credit for the sprite work and just artwork of the series in general, it's extremely well done and really was the only thing worth a damn in these games.
Now I will give some benefit of the doubt I have only played 3 wizardry titles (4,5,6) so maybe the others are somehow better but I doubt it.
My honest answer would be SSI gold box games, they were really fun for the time and they still are but they are eclipsed in almost every way by later RPGs and there's nothing really unique enough about them to make them stand out. They were generic as can be, well made but generic nonetheless.
