Yes, because originally Russia did not have serfdom. Serfdom was a western invention which was involuntarily imposed on the Russia by it's leaders after the 15th century. Although it is true that some emancipated peasants preferred serfdom, and not just for economic reasons. The Fable of the Varangians tells of the contract the peasantry made with the nobility - "We will work the land, we will toil for you, fight for you, endure any hardship and privation on your behalf, but God forbid you force us to decide things for ourselves." So the fable goes, Emancipation robbed the peasants of that last and only freedom, the freedom from responsibility for their own choices, which they had bought so dearly.
