So you already like bombers because it's a lot of ordinance up close. Less distance for the bombers to cover means you give the enemy ship less time to respond. So if you're in knife fight range they give extra pressure. Yes, it's a small amount per fighter, but it adds up. The Piranha moves real slow, even with bomber AI, it'll just start blasting at whatever's in range for the entire time it takes to U turn and head back. Yeah sure, the Piranha's flux ain't great but what does that matter? It's free damage as far as the mothership is concerned. Not like it needs the flux for anything else.
Even if you're not in knife fight range, bombers go straight towards the enemy. They don't maneuver around shit. It means they're regularly crossing paths with bombers and missiles going the opposite direction. If you've got something spamming annihilators at your face, you're going to lose bombers to it just as collateral damage. Having three overlapping PD mounts per wing to thin out incoming bullshit helps. I ain't gonna oversell it beyond that as they doesn't benefit from PD skill, also while the Piranha is reloading its bomb bay those PD mounts aren't doing anything useful and so they only have partial uptime. They will always prioritise following their bombing run loop no matter what. Thing is, you don't need it to be amazing, especially when it's functionally free and you can field 12 of the things. You just need it to shoot at things while its doing its job. If it takes out exactly one hammer, that's still a net win for you.
