Rome 1, Medieval 2 and Shogun 2 are the best ones. Three Kingdoms is an honourable mention and might be easier to get into as a new player. Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 are quite fun, but very dated. Atilla has a cult following but it is very unstable.
The worst ones are Empire, Rome 2, and ToB. Troy and Pharaoh are widely hated, but they're not as bad imo.
