stick to the pike and rifle tactic. When meeting an enemy army pay make sure your riflemen's line of sight is unobstructed but protect the flanks in case the enemy cavalry swoops in. Riflemen get better at melee in the 18th c. because bayonettes, but still try to have strong anti-cavalry units nearby and some melees if the enemy tries to rush forward onto your riflemen. Research a lot and often. Artillery is useful, but cannons not so much. I'd stick to howitzers unless you are targetting enemy towers, which can be a problem.
