It's a ridiculous contract (kson and highgai also say that), but there's no defending breaching a contract. There is also no defending of quoting the sponsor costs that were not work related. They basically scammed sponsors to pay private vacations.
The right thing to do is to negotiate a contract change and be transparent. Because this is about trust and transparency, not money.
