In my experience, the most significant binary that exists in human behavior is the desire for restitution, or for retaliation.
Punitive, or preventative.
These two outlooks on social issues are the underlying difference in opinion for people who "just can't seem to reconcile" on a given issue. I like to ask a question of people to gage their awareness of their position on this. I don't remember who originally came up with this question. Probably some philosophy twat.
