I used to work in the entertainment industry and met Stevie and other blind musicians like him. They have a small squad of handlers, that either use subtle physical promps/touch to communicate direction to face, reactions and gestures to use in order to socially fit in better and make others feel more comfortable around them, and their disability. They also often wear earbuds to get cues from handlers. These folks also develop other heightened senses. There is a very specific handling course one has to be instructed in if one is going to be a caretaker or assistant for them during their performance.
Trivia:
Ray Charles had a contract with a rider that said he wanted a bowl of grapes on the table of his hotel room.
I asked him why grapes? And he explained with a laugh and big smile that if they were not there, he knew the production company was probably not paying attention to the rest of his contract needs...and he loved grapes.
