Have you ever been driving in the car by yourself, and you have some kind of funny thought pop into your mind, and you laugh a bit, and you feel like there's something else laughing alongside you? Have you ever done some disgusting, evil thing in complete solitude, and still had the feeling that someone was watching you and judging you for it? That's God.
God doesn't give a fuck if you're a Christian, a buddhist, a muslim, or anything else. So many people fall into the trap of thinking, "if I adhere to X doctrine, I'll find God!", and then they're left feeling disappointed when some bearded guy doesn't appear to them in a dream. God is with you every second of every day. You need absolutely nothing to find God other to recognize that there is a consciousness higher than yourself, and to love this consciousness for giving you free will.
Perhaps I'm making assumptions, but it seems like you expect something from God. You're placing an edict upon him. You're saying, "I did everything I was supposed to do, and I'm still not happy... I don't get it!". Except, it seems like you failed to do the one thing God requires, which is to recognize his existence. There are plenty of people who adhere to religious doctrines but don't have a real connection with God; isn't this, itself, proof that God can't be found through earthly means?
If you want God to answer your prayers, then you need to stop worrying about yourself. Stop expecting things from him. Live your life as you wish, adhering only to the knowledge of God's existence and the drip feed of intuition he provides you. You don't need a religion to tell you what's right and wrong. Do what's right, and avoid what's wrong, based purely on what you believe in your heart, and believe that this intuition is a message from God. Do this, and never blame God for your misfortunes, because your misfortunes are brought upon by other flawed people with free will. In doing so, I guarantee you will find happiness.
