1 and 2 are really solid movies not just for horror.

It's more psychological horror despite all the gory stuff in it. Like the first two movies are kind of centered around this forbidden knowledge. The idea that if you could experience infinite pleasure and infinite pain they'd eventually be indistinguishable and you'd be forever warped by it. I remember hearing it was based on these photos of dead by a thousand cuts (living dismemberment as a form of execution in China). That a lot of the condemned appeared to be in a state of euphoria. It was likely the drugs they pumped them full of since public execution like this is mostly performative. But still it's oddly haunting and lead to this whole thing. The later movies lose a lot of that and just focus on the demons being demons and some kind of lore that's inconsequential the story it was telling before.
