It's reasonable to think that consciousness follows natural laws, but they don't have to be the ones we currently theorize. Maybe consciousness primarily happens in another space disjoint from the observable universe that follows classical mechanics and no quantum bullshit

as in you not only just invented consciousness must be related to some other thing which has nothing to do with this universe, you literally invent that "thing". you pull some "another space disjoint from the observable universe" out of your ass like it clearly makes sense. you invented a whole...thing, just like that, and you're extremely comfortable with that.
bro if that doesn't seem off to you then you'll fuck up with science.

The very idea of a "consciousness" with subjective experience is dogma and intuition. In the same way, humans across many societies have intuited that consciousness is not tied to our physical bodies. Where does it go? If it existed in the matter we know about, any encoding of consciousness would quickly degrade, so it should exist in a way that it cannot interact much with the known universe.

why I say it's cope. you can't use that as science. it's hope and cope, something else happens after death, and the only way primitive chimps found a way towards that was this "outside our universe other place thing". for whatever primitive reasons. that's not science. doesn't matter ALL people "feel" that, it's not science thus could be pure cope that's it. survival shit. whatever. doesn't matter. it's not science.
also don't get mad at me for invalidating that cope. it's not my fucking problem. I'm just pointing out that's not science.

doesn't matter what you call reality. what matters is the consequences of experiencing it. if I can't avoid getting hungry by thinking it's not real Idgaf about what you call it or what you think it is.
also particle interaction and shit in this universe doesn't mean you can't exist after you die here. from your perspective. just keep it science related anon that's it.

A reminder that scientific "laws" are just our best models for explaining observations. There is no stone tablet stuck at the centre of the galaxy that says it must be this way.
>it can't be any other way
Until you explain the particle interactions Jesus used to make water into wine, I'm not buying it.
Or Cartesian dualism. Thought and consciousness are distinctly separate from matter, as one is proven, per se illustrata, the other is inferrable only through the first, through senses that everybody knows to lie. (As in dreams, hallucinations, etc)

Science stopped being fun when I realized that the current approach can't solve what science pretends to solve. Just look at nutritional science: a century of detailing molecular processes just to circle around the common wisdom that humans should eat fresh plants and fresh animal products preferably not contaminated by capitalist' schemes while chronic disease keeps rising. What the fuck is science doing? Not solving any problems.

So you haven't figured out yet that science operates on the assumption that more knowledge = more control. Every scientific paper is written with that motivation: learning more about the body to develop medicine (control of the body), learning more about the psyche to develop therapy (mind control), learning more about ecology to shape nature according to human values like it's all a recreational park for our amusement, learning more about chemistry to control the properties of substances, Science = control. Yet scientific breakthroughs come from somewhere out of control.

Yes. However, being "cool and fun" is not and has never been the point of any of the sciences. It's incidental.
The kind of person who makes the meme you posted is the kind of person who wants science held back because he is afraid of change and doesn't like that the "cool and fun" stuff he learned as a child is no longer considered accurate. This kind of person wants science to serve primarily as a source of entertainment rather than a source of knowledge.

There is a circularity because theories are required to contextualize an data into an observation, but the theories are not of a scientific nature - they are not founded on experiment.
So it is immediately a metaphysical realm, but that doesn't mean it has to go into endless philosophy. Just list principles and assumptions and that constrains the observation. Then tweak those principles and assumptions and see if the observations change - or are even possible.
Of course, it is most probably that the assumptions are over-specified, convenient, and all of those other accusations that can be made of any system taking money from taxpayers.

Yes, I'm endlessly entertained by it. That's all it is to me.

>The Aneristic Principle is that of order, the Eristic Principle is that of disorder. On the surface, the Universe seems (to the ignorant) to be ordered; this is the aneristic illusion. Actually, what order is “there” is imposed on primal chaos in the same sense that a person’s name is draped over his actual self. It is the job of the scientist, for example, to implement this principle in a practical manner and some are quite brilliant at it. But on closer examination, order dissolves into disorder, which is the ERISTIC ILLUSION.

Math and science are as inseparable as science and art, or art and math.

To be quite frank, some argue that math is the purest science of all, TOO pure to be a science, even.

“One plus one always equals two. Always.”
“Okay, show me your theory for that.”
“What?”
“What?”

Whether you consider math to be science is irrelevant. It still works. It’s inseparable. It IS the language of science. Everything.

We can get more annoying. Like, what is matter? Anything with mass, or anything that… matters(is real/present)?

Google Search: “Matter without mass?”
Google Answer: “Yes, retard. Photons.”

Google Search: “Is light matter?”
Google Answer: “No, retard. Light 0 mass!”

Semantics is the literal rot of all scientific discussion, and you are no longer talking about science.

One plus one equals two depends on axiomatic assumptions that are asserted a priori and cannot be rationally proven.
The definition of 1, 2, +, =, the rules of arithmatic, these things are no less innate than a controversial psychological theory or a taxonomic classification of a worm.
They all depend on an entity outside the 'system' that they delineate, in order to select then from the set of all possible axioms, into a subset that coheres enough to 'produce' derivative statements.

What did science look like when it was supposedly cool or fun for OP? Was it Origin of Species time? When people were able to explore new landmasses and discover new species that they could draw pictures of and refer to in later documentation. Was it when people were making more progress in astrolonomical phenomena and determine the probabilities that "life as we know it" existed outside of this planet? There are still many mysteries even from these time periods that haven't been either rigorously explored or properly documented. I think one of the issues that may make modern science a little less appealing for some, but probably not all, is the economic system attached to it. If the majority of people had their fundamental needs met without needing to appease some other system through their careers they'd possibly occasionally find interesting subjects to explore more scientifically through personal research online. I think many people I've met who seemed even like what some may refer to as "laymen" have this propensity and it's kind of unsettling to think there may be a lot of exceptions. What would a person be like from a day to day basis if they genuinely had no curiosity about the natural world and were unable to find interest in anything that required the most rudimentary forms of rigor or exploration? It's possible, however, I've met some of these types.

I don't have a problem with philosophy in and of itself. Science is ultimately derived from natural philosophy and there are many schools of Ancient and Medieval philosophy that serve as a good basis to better oneself and the world in addition to being a good lens to see the world through.

My problem with philosophy is that modern philosophy is for the most part idle thinking about questions we really can't answer no matter how hard we try since we aren't in a position to know the answers to these questions and they are either poorly worded or just not even in the realm of things we could attempt to answer. It comes up with questions that there's no way we could get meaningful answers to.

At least when a philosophical question comes up in mathematics or in science, it's the result of a proof, theoretical result or an experimental result, so even if it is unanswerable, it has substance to it and has actual implications and merit to finding out an answer. Most philosophical questions are basically quackery.

It sounds like you just hate idle thinkers and procrastinators. It sounds like the reality of not knowing deeply frustrates you. It borders on a religious sort of feeling, perhaps even fear. A conscious or subconscious dread of the unknowable. Hmm.

That you lump quackery philosophy in with philosophy as a whole is a very black and white angle to begin with. Again, literally anything that is talked about hard or deep enough can be considered a form of philosophy, if it pertains to reality. "Why is it so?"

Physicists are also allowed to crack open a bear and discuss stranger things for the fun of it. Much of philosophy is just for the fun of it.

Based.
I agree and want to expand on that thought, that most fields of science feed off of each other in order to progress. There is a high level of interconnectivity between the different fields, even if it's just a circle like this guy suggests.

>My problem with philosophy is that modern philosophy is for the most part idle thinking about questions we really can't answer no matter how hard we try since we aren't in a position to know the answers to these questions
How is this a bad thing, exactly? Anything we don’t know is everything else out there, and there are definitely going to be things we can only speculate at, like when it comes to psychology and such. There’s a difference between believing and entertaining. Many of the greatest minds in history - natural philosophers proper - were entertaining, not necessarily believing, rather arcane forms of thought, without any proof. Some minds in antiquity had no proof at all, and yet they still came to shockingly accurate assumptions about nature. There is definitely a form of “natural mysticism”, the way Democritus - the ‘father of the atom’ - absolutely *knew* that things got smaller and smaller. Some just philosophized the nature of things correctly before we could get to the confirmation point. I find that interesting, but also comforting. Even when they did come to accurate conclusions, they still nonetheless spliced it all with the arrogance of the imagination. Safe science is stifling science, since it doesn’t like to attempt or entertain new things.

I do agree however that philosophy updates itself, and natural philosophy is the philosophy that won out. Nature is nature no matter the nature. We philosophize from there. Keep to what we know, and to what we can realistically speculate about.

>>16639278
>Much of philosophy is just for the fun of it.
This is another thing. Sometimes philosophizing is just silly backyard talk and nothing else - but these people are still entertaining/philosophizing the unknowable. Why not? There will be frontiers we can barely guess at.

>Philosophy is a fucking joke outside of the Ancient Greek and Medieval schools of philosophy. It's falsifiable to a fault and doesn't even assert any real methods of proving anything. It's literally just power-scaling for nerds too retarded to do science.
Measurement itself is a philosophical construct. The very idea of observation, falsifiability, and evidence comes from epistemology. Science is applied philosophy.

It never happened. The emperor has no clothes.

The best they can show you is a variation *within* a kind, then they claim it proves changes of kinds (it doesn't), and they claim it proves life coming from a common ancestor (it doesn't), and they claim it proves life came from non-life (it doesn't, and that literally violates a law of biology). And all of that is founded upon the blind faith belief that literally nothing exploded into a universe of laws and order and systems which can be rationally studied, it's just all so dumb; but most people are indoctrinated by the schools and media, and most are too cowardly to critically analyze what they were indoctrinated to believe. Just consider all the hate and hostility I'll get in response to this science-based post for challenging their science-denying creation myth which never passed the scientific method; most people aren't even willing to consider something if it gets that sort of hatred in response.

Yes, I love math and computer science. I think neuroevolution is fascinating and would like to contribute to the field one day. I read research papers on artificial intelligence and use them to build models and reproduce their results, but I have only been studying the subject for about one month in order to improve my professional skills as a programmer.

When you have seen the proverbial mountaintop of most commercial software development it is not seriously intellectually challenging. I discovered the science of machine learning while searching for a new challenge to expand my skills and compete in the job market. It is a fascinating subject full of powerful ideas.

I also think astronomy is fascinating and full of wonders but am only an enthusiast on the subject. I love reading about all the strange and fascinating things happening in outer space.
