Is this rage bait?
Nobody who finished a Duolingo course can even form a simple sentence in the language he "learned"
Only way to learn is the old fashioned way, study through textbooks, practice with others and consume media

true, there are only three different language families there (germanic, romance and russian) and they are all branches of the same tree
if you want to claim you're smart and brag on the internet, pick at least one from each major family: indo-european, uralo-altaic, and sino-tibetan

I'm a Japanese speaker (half Japanese by birth) and the Duolingo Japanese course is particularly bad. I think it actually teaches really badly and for the time you'd spend on it, you'd be better off learning formally. Might be biased because I can already speak it, but I had the feeling it's far behind other courses they have.

Not only are they branches of the same tree, the languages of Europe have spent centuries influencing each other's structure by being spoken together. For example, Latin and Proto-Germanic both lacked the use of "have" to indicate the perfect aspect, but French and German both have it.

Why does duolingo in particular suck? It goes through vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, speaking, and writing. What more are you looking for? You get out what you put into it. I guess you're not really interacting with a live person, which i see as the only major drawback.
Anonymous No.16694021 [Report] >>16694024

It focuses too much on direct "conversion" between your language and the target language. Also its examples are contrived. On the mobile app it doesn't explain grammar.

Seconding this. English has some odd peculiarities but overall it has pretty simple grammar, phonology and all that, plus you can fuck it up pretty badly and still be understood.

I would think the latter is more due to English-speakers being regularly exposed to mangled English than e.g. Polish speakers are to mangled Polish (because a lot more foreigners have reason to learn English than Polish) than any intrinsic property of the language.

Anon, I don't want to be mean to you but language "gadgets" are shit. I can speak 4 languages, and the best method I've found is going head-in, watch youtube, talk to normies online and read. There's no shame in using dictionaries or being corrected all the time.

As a side note, my worst language that I have some knowledge in is French, and that's the one I've tried to "practice" with Duolingo, lmao.
