Word through the grapevine from most of my colleagues is that their departments are cutting graduate admissions by anywhere from 15-30%, smaller public and private schools that don't have big endowments and rely on regular smaller grants are getting hit harder. As for how long this will last, it's anybody's guess. If Congress fast-tracked a return to pre-2025 funding and positions, I'd say maybe 2-3 years to see the effect on admissions and faculty recover, but that doesn't seem likely - the simple truth is that research is low on Congress' list of priorities right now. Any effective pushback on the research freezes and cuts could be years off - this is the new normal for the foreseeable future.

If it were just a matter of funding research and experiments to advance science and technology, it would probably be an 80-20 issue in favor of increasing, not decreasing, the funding.
