With all the funding craziness going on, how much more selective will physical science grad school programs be? And for how long?

Most likely much more competitive, considering the NSF budget cuts.

Certainly this will hold at least until Trump leaves office, which will happen in Jan 2029.

Word through the grapevine from most of my colleagues is that their departments are cutting graduate admissions by anywhere from 15-30%, smaller public and private schools that don't have big endowments and rely on regular smaller grants are getting hit harder. As for how long this will last, it's anybody's guess. If Congress fast-tracked a return to pre-2025 funding and positions, I'd say maybe 2-3 years to see the effect on admissions and faculty recover, but that doesn't seem likely - the simple truth is that research is low on Congress' list of priorities right now. Any effective pushback on the research freezes and cuts could be years off - this is the new normal for the foreseeable future.

They could cut the DEI and Muslim outreach programs, redirecting that money to science.

The tech industry is also in the shitter i.e. highly competitive. I am teaching myself machine learning math just to get an entry level job. It is really is not as hard as I thought. Just calculating partial derivatives and nudging variables around until things work well enough.

Muslim outreach? The government discriminates against Muslim immigrants and bars Muslim immigration. You think the zionist government is giving Muslims a handicap? They are mass murdering Muslims for the MIC.

All these institutions are biased to zionist Jews. They hate Muslims, I have to work harder to achieve the same result while zionists are handed out contracts for the MIC via nepotism.

>t. Muslim

>nepotism
You think Muslims just sprouted from the ground in Michigan? Whiny ass bitch. Everyone who isn't a nepo has to work harder, not just your snowflake identity group. You have real things you can complain about, like when the FBI coerces the retards in your community to buy a bomb from the FBI just so the FBI can pretend they stopped a terrorist. Whine about that instead.

This was always bullshit. Bolden made a single offhanded comment in an interview 15 years ago; not a single dollar was ever spent on that shit at NASA, and yet the GOP still whips it out every time they need another excuse to gut research.

If you guys can distract them while they're not looking, I'll run in and change the
> -$X funding
to
> +$X funding
It's crazy and farfetched, I know
Could even consider it to be a moonshot
I wonder what would would happen if NASA restructured as an 5013c? Or keep NASA as is, and just contract everything out to a more favorable structure(if there even is a more preferable one)

In the similar model of Pokemon Go, you could have a collaboractive 'Star Seeker' app that has you search the sky through a web-connected camera at designated time(s), and then the pictures are uploaded and puzzled together with other pictures taken from around the (area/state/country/world). Have a Space Journal/Captain's Log that you can. use to help track time.

Use drones that are positioned at the right altitude.location with a flashing light attached that can act as a beacon, as well as having the capability to restrict the width of the beacon's emitted light to a designated range.

More selective, but not in the good way. It’s going to get worse. More nepotism and cronyism, more bullshit publications in desperate attempts to secure funding, more “holistic” enrollment as admin says.

The reality is that the US system is just shit. It worked during the Cold War because there was a unified impetus to perform well just to dab on dem commies. Post Cold War US academia has absolutely no checks and balances from the government. All that Trump can do is cut finances. The government can’t go to a specific institution and purge all the corruption that has taken root. Budget cuts are like chemotherapy. You’re killing cancer cells alongside healthy cells to the point the entire organ fails and hits the bucket.

The Russians have a saying: there’s no Stalin for them. Trump isn’t Stalin and no US president can be Stalin. Enjoy your shitfest you call “liberty”.

I've been speaking with a lot of profs in chemistry/physics (I'm a matsci phd hopeful) and some of them seem optimistic that this will blow over by next cycle and others think this is indicative of permanent trends. it sucks when the ideal is to have some expectation/plan for what to do next but I really get the impression that this is a wait-and-see ordeal.
>that research is low on Congress' list of priorities right now.
really? it seems like they're scared shitless re: Chinese superiority in quantum/materials/energy...

The quotas remain, they're just flipped around now - everyone's gonna start forcing the retarded "intellectual diversity" mandates you're seeing in states like Indiana. They'll start injecting politics and religion into everything and crank theories will all start demanding equal time in classrooms.

I think your profs are in a media and social network bubble. If it were just a matter of funding research and experiments to advance science and technology, it would probably be an 80-20 issue in favor of increasing, not decreasing, the funding. The issue is that money is fungible and that many of the institutions who receive government funding are at the same time spending more and more on administrative bloat and self-glorifying, trendy forms of fascist social engineering that promote race essentialism and other bizarre or regressive nonsense that isn't related to science.

They are scared shitless, but not enough to actually do anything about it.

If they wanted the US to remain relevant in chip fabrication they need to guarantee long-term financial subsidies for the fabrication industry so that moving operations here is economically viable. But they won't.
If they wanted the US to remain the leader in space exploration and research they need to guarantee long-term support for BOTH manned spaceflight and space science. But they won't.
If they wanted the US to stay at the forefront of energy technology and production they would be handing over funds to overhaul nuclear power in the US and investing more into magneto-inertial fusion research. But they won't.

They don't care about doing something, they care about looking like they're doing something.

if anything the whole openai/deepseek shit and all the funding pumped toward llms has shown that they really have no problems turning next-gen science into a grift. the US has made the final shift from merely not respecting science to actively disrespecting it.
