I was doing basic mathmatics and I was always wondering why he had all the little rules in the beginning. Then I was always wondering why half the math I was doing in HS/relearning now is basically doing the same thing over and over again with a slight change. Then I realized I was using the algebra rules over and over from the beginning of the book.

It's not really a dichotomy is it? You use whatever you think fits and well if you haven't done algebra to rearrange an analytical formula, or if you haven't done calculus on a vector than I don't think you should be asking such questions yet.
