>>16698817>Is fish oil a scam?Yes, for multiple reasons.
One, the concept of fish oil (and omega-3s in general) as a healthy food is based on flawed interpretations of studies and/or intentionally misleading studies. The fish oil craze was kicked off by studies which had subjects replace vegetable oils (omega-6) in their diet and found a wide range of positive effects with people and the media in particular assuming that this was due to omega-3s being good for you
The reality is that omega-6 is just so bad for you that reducing it in any way will have positive effects. All polyunsaturated fats are unhealthy and the optimal choice would be removing them entirely rather than replacing the worst one with a slightly better one.
Two, one of the reasons why polyunsaturated fats are so bad for you is because they are highly prone to oxidation, which means that there is an extremely good chance that any fish oil you buy is rancid. Even the heat of your digestive process has been shown to be sufficient to cause polyunsaturated fats to oxidize. Fish oil comes from fatty fish which are exclusively cold water fish and once those fats are exposed to temperatures any higher than those where the fish live, they begin to break down. This means that unless your fish oil has been constantly refrigerated at every step in the process of production, beginning when the fish are pulled out of the water, then it is guaranteed to be at least partially and probably fully rancid, which makes it even more harmful.
