A physicist I respect said he is the GOAT in terms of sheer mathematical ability. Does /sci/ agree?

What has he ever doe for us? He just sits all day thinking about made up problems by following a set of arbitrary constraints to their logical conclusion.
He is not a patch on Isaac Newton, our beloved and helpful autist and progenitor of the modern world

it's surprising he admitted on friedman's podcast that he's afraid of being swallowed by big problems and that he abandons a problem if he's not made any progress after a few months

This helps explain his prolificity. He looks under lampposts and doesn't get nerdsniped easily.

>goat
>GOAT
>God Of All Things
This is a Free Masonic term. It is also anti-Christian, in the sense that people are the sheep not the goat. It is also illogical to say that one is the God of all things in terms of one thing, in this case mathematics. So not only is he incorrect, but he fails at basic logic.
>inb4 but maybe he didn't know what he was saying
All the more reason to think he is a fool.

he doesn't even know the quotient rule by heart and has to write it down.

He’s an AI grifter now. You can’t escape your genes. I guarantee he’s desperately hoping for some good results to come out and for him to swoop in and proof some famous problem for fame. Ala Polymath Project.

He would have to solve one of the Millenium Problems or the Twin Prime Conjecture (something along those lines) to even be in the conversation of GOAT status.

There's too much luck involved in major discoveries of that kind. Hence why I refer to ability specifically.

Terry Tao understands his place in mathematics, and to be fair he is very good at existing in his niche. He's not the type to specialize, but he can produce reasonably advanced results in the field. Conversely because he doesn't specialize he probably wont be revered in the same way as someone like Perelman for solving one tremendously difficult problem, and I think he's ok with that.

I have no idea. Cutting edge research is by definition the domain of very small groups, if you are not in one you cant know whats being done. His research is also of zero consequences to the world, so no one can tell it apart.
If he cured cancer people would understand it without having to understand chemistry or biology. But what tao does is useless. Same as witten and others like them.
Its not like im going to read some 500 page thesis on a field of math i never heard about so for me Tao's brilliance will always be nothing more than a rumor i read about online
