Is Chemistry really that hard to get into?
Where's a good place to start?

The Recipe—Blue Sky
This is a two-step cook: reduction of pseudo to methamphetamine, then crystallization. Pay attention, Jesse.

Step 1: The Cook
Ingredients:
50 kg P2P (phenyl-2-propanone)—barrel stuff, not that weak homemade junk.
50 L methylamine—liquid, 40% aqueous, stole it from that train job, right?
100 L methanol—solvent, keeps it smooth.
5 kg aluminum amalgam—catalyst, prepped fresh.
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)—for pH, couple kilos.
Hydrochloric acid (HCl)—gas it later.
Process:
Prep the amalgam: In the vessel, mix aluminum foil strips with mercury chloride—small batch, like 5 g HgCl2 to 500 g Al. Add methanol, let it bubble. That’s your catalyst, Jesse—don’t touch it, it’s nasty.
Base reaction: Dump the P2P and methylamine into the vessel with methanol. Stir it—big paddle, no splashing. Heat to 80°C—slow, steady, no boiling over.
Reduction: Add the amalgam in chunks. It’ll fizz like hell—H2 gas, exothermic as shit. Keep it vented, or we’re toast. Takes 6–8 hours. Smells like death, but that’s how you know it’s working.
Cool it: Let it drop to room temp. You’ll see sludge—meth base in there, oily yellow.
Step 2: Purification
Extract:
Filter the mess—coffee filters if we’re desperate. Get the liquid, ditch the gray gunk.
Add NaOH solution (50% in water)—pH to 12. Separates the freebase meth into an oily layer.
Siphon that oil with the separatory funnel—careful, Jesse, don’t spill my product.
Gas it:
Bubble HCl gas through the oil—rig a generator with salt and sulfuric acid if we’re out. White crystals crash out—bam, methamphetamine hydrochloride.
Filter again, dry it under a heat lamp—low heat, don’t melt it.
Blue magic:
Dissolve in hot ethanol, spike it with copper sulfate—tiny pinch, that’s the blue. Recrystallize slow in a fridge. Big, pure shards—our signature.
Yield
From 50 kg P2P, we’re looking at 40–45 kg pure if you don’t screw it up.

He is lying though. If you are already a Physics major you already do a harder job, chemistry is barely any computation and the rest is just memorization

>rust is the product of iron reacting with oxygen
>one electron moves from atom to atom

Chemistry doesn't tell you why, but because of these facts you can make soap, which chemisty is all about, its the physics of soap and thats actually just it

>Is Chemistry really that hard to get into?
The issue with Chemistry is that you need someone to learn from. It's still something that is mainly taught 1 on 1 at the low level.

>>16703530
It can be, if you want it to be. It can also be easy and incredibly lucrative for the amount of work you put into it.

>>16703640
Chemistry is piss easy, though.

>>16703689
>You are going to have to tell me when chemistry becomes more than following a recipe.
Around the PHD level, IF you choose the right subject. If you are doing synthetic methodology, you're the guy writing the recipe.
Chemistry very much is like cooking in that you also NEVER follow the recipe, you just use it as general guidance.

>>16703699
>Chemistry doesn't tell you why
But it does? That's literally the point of Chemistry.

>chemistry is barely any computation and the rest is just memorization
You won't make it anywhere in chemistry if all you do is memorize.

Isn't that true for nearly everything hard? Most people that enter something of merit usually has a head start by having someone in the family teaching them by early age.

Chemistry can be really cool. It's like physics on meth. Screw the rules, fuck the theory, just back to monkee see monkey do. We don't even have an analytical solution for the Helium atom or something and you dare tell me why Na bonds to Cl and it turns into tasty salt? Fuck off nerd

>he's not starting from hardware store/amazon ingredients
obtain muriatic acid from the hardware store and plenty of aluminum cans. Dissolve some of the aluminum in the muriatic acid until no more dissolves. Evaporate until an off-white solid is left behind. Store this in an airtight container made of glass.
Obtain TCCA pellets from the pool store, crush them and place this in the bottom of a round bottom flask. Add muriatic acid dropwise to generate Cl2 gas, and bubble this through acetone nail polish remover. Distill the acetone at ~118C to collect chloroacetone. Store this in a glass container.
Using MnO2 pottery glaze and Potassium Hydroxide from amazon soap stores, crush both into a powder, mix thoroughly, dissolve in water, then pass air through this solution at oven temperatures to create potassium manganate. Once dry, re-dissolve this in hot water. Using the TCCA method, pass chlorine through this solution, then evaporate the water to collect potassium permanganate. Store this.
Lithium metal is made easily by taking apart Liion or LiFePO batteries, grinding to a powder, then washing with water. The lithium is dissolved in water and can be turned into lithium metal via electrolysis. Melt the lithium metal, and using steel tubing, bubble hydrogen gas through this. The resulting lithium hydride will be reacted with (some of) the Aluminum trichloride made earlier to make lithium aluminum hydride. Store this very carefully so no air or water enters it's storage container.
Sodium metabisulfite is made by passing SO2 gas through NaOH lye solution. SO2 can be made by heating pyrite above 700C (you can find pyrite basically worldwide, it's not a rare mineral).

(2/2)
THF is obtained from PVC cement, wash the cement with water. Add the sodium metabisulfite to the water, then distill at 93C. Dry bath salts from the pharmacy at 300C, and add this to the distilled liquid until it no longer clumps, then filter.
Heat borax at 350C+ to form boron oxide. Mix this with carbon ash, and pass chlorine gas over/through it with the TCCA method above 500C to form boron trichloride. This gas is passed through the lithium aluminum hydride to form diborane gas, which is bubbled into your THF to make Borane-THF.
Sodium cyanide can be purchased directly. Mix this with your borane-THF to make sodium cyanoborohydride. Store this.
Methanol can be purchased on amazon.
Using hardware store toluene, mix your potassium permanganate until the reaction is complete, and then add lye to the solution.
While these reactions proceed, heat crushed eggshells in a crucible at 700C+ to form Calcium Oxide. While still hot, add this to the completed reactions alongside additional lye to create benzene.
Benzene is reacted with your chloroacetone and aluminum trichloride to form the next intermediate.
Using your own urine, add lye to generate ammonia gas. Using this gas, evaporate the methanol and pass both gasses through powdered aluminum (which can be made with a ball mill). Pass this gas through the solution with your intermediate and add your sodium cyanoborohydride.
Clean up and enjoy your meal :)

Sodium is the tasty part, your body likely developed receptors specific to it, because you need it to not die.
The others taste like shit, apparently:

>Isn't that true for nearly everything hard?
You can't exactly throw someone at a lab without instruction and expect them to get good at chemistry, even after doing one or two lab courses on the subject.
There's a lot of nonsense lore that isn't written down anywhere. Running reactions is often something you do more by feeling than recipe.
It's like teaching a great chef. Sure, you can get there, if you try hard enough, but you likely won't on your own.
