>muh solid state physics
name one application of all this TQFT quantum Hall effect string defect bullshit
Hard mode: no buzzwords like quantum computing and AI

I feel like there are few to no RL applications to most of the extremely sophisticated branches of physics these days. Did the LHC actually give humanity any practical benefit?

Of course, that is ignoring the various technological benefits brought about in attempting to create and run the LHC and similar experiments in the first place. The moon landing gave the world nothing, but the countless technologies developed in the process of getting there were immeasurably valuable

Uhhhhh SQUIDs are useful I guess.
And graphene will take over the world soon.
Also give it two more weeks until we figure out high-temperature superconductors.

This is a thread about solid state physics, not particle physics. Please stick to the topic. Sincerely, OP.

I have never accepted this line of propaganda and never will.
Everything discovered through these programs could have been discovered just the same without them. And i dont believe theres been any practical technologies out of the research to create the LHC, or the moon landing.
Like, you got how to make saturn V rockets out of the moon landing, how is that of any use besides its only intended use?
What do you get out the LHC, how to make some ultra high energy particle detector?

>let's spend trillions of dollars, we will get fantastic wireless drills in return
yeah that's a huge waste of money. All the technology would've been made made either way in due course without spending a fortune.

Invisible braces, scratch-resistant lenses, memory foam, ear thermometers, shoe insoles, long-distance telecommunications, adjustable smoke detectors, safety grooving, cordless tools, water filters, computer mouses, rubber athletic shoes, lithium batteries, SSDs and flash drives, medical scans of multiple sorts, microprocessors, microwaves, several composite materials, micro and infrared lasers, hand held vacuum cleaners, solar panels, and a bunch of other stuff were invented in great part or solely for the space race.
