Water soluble chemicals and nanoparticle sized particles can be uptaken by plants and distributed to different parts of their structure; some plants are better at this for particular elements than others, and this property can be used to clean up mine tailings or even extract minerals from dust easier than dissolving the entire thing in acid and pulling one metal out at a time. Many of these plants accumulate enough of specific elements that it is more economical to grow them for metal than for food or environmental reasons.
Underlying assumptions for making this work are all the requisite physics for chemistry, so not much.

Empty set.
Successor function.
Something something induction.
Recursion.
That's about it. I can't build the full continuum, but I can get arbitrarily close to any point choosen.

"it's all just models, man" -said in different ways by two smart profs
"keep asking questions and stay healthy. check your assumptions (from programming experience and logic)" -me
we do not typically directly prove things when using the scientific method in the modern way,
we repeatedly reject null hypotheses under increasingly stringent conditions which allow us to make affirmative claims with certain degrees of confidence, claims about dispelling the opposite of what we are trying to prove

life uh, finds a way

If only modern science worked like that

Modern science does work like that, the problem is that pop science works on sensationalism and dogma.

all things are made of atoms — little particles that move around in perpetual motion, attracting each other when they are a little distance apart, but repelling upon being squeezed into one another.
