Most likely bait, but I will take it. Among mathematicians he is considered one of the premier mathematicians of the last few decades. He has made non trivial contributions to very different fields of math, which is rare these days as the degree of specialisation is so high. Very few people posses the ability to achieve the depth of understanding necessary to reach the frontier of research in unrelated fields.

If I need to explain to you why math is essential to the sciences, then you will never understand, so I won't try.

He has done nothing useful for industry so it makes no difference for me. Im not going to read anything he did because i could never understand it, im unable to know if its genius or nonsense. This is because i'm not a mathematicians, i have studied some mathematics during my career, but not like him.
Verdict: Im not qualified to know of Tao is bright. Likely theres only like 1000 people in the world qualified enough to have a valid assesment

I don't look at third party rankings, they can be gamed and they are often dogshit, even more so for math that has a different publishing culture than the rest of academia. If you have spent more than 5 minutes in grad math or beyond, you are aware of the different journals and what quality of papers they tend to accept.

But that's not even important, you think I rate Tao solely because of some of the journals his papers are in, when the causality is reversed. I rate him because I've spent time around people more knowledgeable than me who are able to assess his output accurately and they rate him and his works ends up in certain journals consequently.

Do I think math and its publishing culture is 100% meritocratic? Of course not, humans are involved. But that doesn't mean you can never tell greatness either.

Anyway, go respond to this with some deliberately obtuse misinterpretation of what I'm saying so you can continue to be argumentative. Sprinkle in some other races as well, you haven't mentioned blacks yet but I am sure you will be able to weave it into your reply.
