I've heard of people being notified of acceptances early but not of rejections. There's a crackpot voice in my head saying that the email was meant to be something else entirely, but that feels unlikely too.

Should I email the department and ask them if there was an error of some sort?

Rejections like this early can only mean that you fucked something up. Are you sure that you checked all formalities and requirements? Maybe you applied for a reputable position that everyone wants to apply?

Probably.

I did, not sure how popular the position was, but they seemed to be somewhat interested in my application based on the open house offer.

I'm an autist who lives at home. Can somebody explain what the hell OP is talking about? What's an open house session? Did he have to prove himself informally to a group of normies? Did he have to explain his professional value and get judged based on some slippery criteria?

Yeah yeah fuck me because ha ha.

I'm curious because it's interesting. Does getting credentials really involve unstructured and informal processes? If so, I don't envy the typical career lifestyle. I well understand already these educational processes are fallible instruments that ought to be open to improvement like anything else. Though clearly I'm naive; could a good jigaboo pop on out and add to my mental model of society pretty please?

Nice universities will invite you to tour the campus and talk to the faculty after you get admitted. Cruel universities will invite you to tour the campus and talk to the faculty before you get admitted, and will then ask the faculty to judge you to help them make their admit decisions.
