Not every persistent trait is an adaptation for something. Sometimes the answer to "why does this trait exist here" is as simple as "the people who settled there happened to have that trait."

trait may have an effect. perhaps easier to detect focused attention. that creature is looking at me, either she wants to mate or she is going to attack.
