>>16720609I don't really see that much of a difference other than the fact that perhaps most people don't do "serious" research (or sometimes none at all) in their masters to which then I'd agree with you. That said, I published work in homotopy theory with my advisor during my masters in a decent (but not top) journal and then went on to write another paper post-masters in the same field. Doing a Ph.D is about learning to do research, so I'd pretty much say I know how to conduct research/read papers/formulate conjectures because I did it during my masters and independently NEETing in my house. I did apply and was accepted to a few decent Ph.D programs (pure math), but I ultimately decided that unless I only want to be in academia having a Ph.D doesn't really buy me anything at this point other than a select few jobs I could probably get by with a masters (and academia is a shit show anyway). Most of a Ph.D is also just "academic hazing" taking classes, passing quals and wasting time on anything but actually conducting research in the last two years. I really didn't want to waste 5 more years, but this is my personal choice. I think one could still contribute if they aren't "gate kept" by other Ph.D holders, but I have a feeling as usual you're stepping on toes and egos.
