I did my undergraduate in math + cs with very little physics. I also did my math phd in algebra. Now, I have started study physics and I can honestly say the math + physics combo is a lot better than the math + CS combo. I am planning to do a second MSc in physics. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

You have a PhD in math and you're looking at a MSc in physics? Why? At some point when does the pursuit of academic qualifications indicate a fear of commitment to a particular discipline or real employment?

fucking based. I did the opposite route of math/physics double major, then HEP theory phd, but then I realized pheno people are morons who don’t know the difference between a Lie algebra and a Lie group so now I’m going deep into algebra.

>NOOO STOP SEEKING MORE KNOWLEDGE YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GENUINELY CURIOUS YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BEGRUDGINGLY LEARN ENOUGH TO GET A JOB AND THEN JUST WORK
And people wonder why scientific progress is slowing down. The modern academia and its consequences have been a disaster for science. We need to return to times when (proto)science was pursued by wealthy men in their free time as a hobby out of genuine interest, not by average men only using it as means of putting food on the table.

Nothing wrong with credentialism for its own sake but what's the point of getting more degrees? He'll, I stopped at a math masters and can pretty much pick up anything at this point and read it. Even publishing papers I could do if I want (already did 2). I don't see the point, once you get to like the masters level unless you want to move around from postdoc to postdoc and play the academic ponzi scheme game.

OP here. I am trying to not sound like an asshole but the difference between MSc level and PhD level mathematics is honestly like the difference between high school and MSc. Most people I know, including myself, agree with this assessment. This might be different in other disciplines but in pure mathematics, a PhD is literally the bare minimum to be able to engage with the discipline as a peer.

I don't really see that much of a difference other than the fact that perhaps most people don't do "serious" research (or sometimes none at all) in their masters to which then I'd agree with you. That said, I published work in homotopy theory with my advisor during my masters in a decent (but not top) journal and then went on to write another paper post-masters in the same field. Doing a Ph.D is about learning to do research, so I'd pretty much say I know how to conduct research/read papers/formulate conjectures because I did it during my masters and independently NEETing in my house. I did apply and was accepted to a few decent Ph.D programs (pure math), but I ultimately decided that unless I only want to be in academia having a Ph.D doesn't really buy me anything at this point other than a select few jobs I could probably get by with a masters (and academia is a shit show anyway). Most of a Ph.D is also just "academic hazing" taking classes, passing quals and wasting time on anything but actually conducting research in the last two years. I really didn't want to waste 5 more years, but this is my personal choice. I think one could still contribute if they aren't "gate kept" by other Ph.D holders, but I have a feeling as usual you're stepping on toes and egos.
