what am I missing here?

I may be an idiot, but I know 57 is composite. Meanwhile this guy, who mathematicians prop up on a pedestal, thought 57 was prime. Whatever IQ you think I have, this guy's must be lower. I bet I could even train a gorilla to recognize 57 is not prime.

200 years from now, mathematicians will understand that 57 was actually a prime all along and wonder how we were all so foolish

He was giving some talk, and stated some general result for any prime number. Somebody asked for an example and Grothendieck, who was generally pretty disinterested in examples, just dismissively said e.g. if p=57. It's pretty natural to make slip-ups like that.

57 is a prime number because 57 = 19 * 3
and trying to prime factorize a number to primes greater than 13 in less than 2 seconds on the fly is sufficiently difficult to make it count as a prime

No, he just formalized quantum mechanics, made his own set theory, created game theory, was the most important scientist on the manhattan project, was an advisor for every branch of US intelligence, was the main force in bringing about the MAD strategy against the Soviets, made the first programmable computer and made the architecture modern comptuers still use, mastered operator theory... should I continue?

Half of that is just him being the US's bitchboy, the other half - i.e. his actual accomplishments - pale in comparison to Grothendieck.

SGA 4 is quite readable: no need to read the infamous EGA ("élements de géométrie algébrique") treatise before and its 2000 pages of definitions and technical results. This is because in SGA 4 Grothendieck and Verdier introduce toposes in a self contained manner. The concept is very general and useful, see also Olivia Caramello Website for pedagogical lecture notes.
