i graduated with a chem degree 3 years ago. i used to do stoichiometry and concentration problems in my head without any issue. i cannot comprehend basic a wt% problem anymore and im getting genuinely frustrated at myself for becoming like this.

can anyone explain wtf happened. is there any chance i can go back?

You get slower when you’re older. It’s just a fact of life.

University does not make you "smart" and not being able to solve university kind of challenges anymore doesn't make you "dumb". But university has a strong ability to make undergrads feel smart. The professor will select challenges that are solved and no one has to deal with anymore but the solution is beautiful and methodical. They will then teach this obsolete and obscure method, where you just follow algorithms, as a lazy way of being able to demonstrate the student was present, paying attention and working along. In exams they will then ask you to do something no researcher and no professional will do: Solve a trivial problem manually. Everyone else just uses a computer. Every degreemills grading system is based on this, which is why you're training to be good at such things when in the degree mill. And since it is useless to you outaide of this system you quickly forget it again.
Now: Since the above is true it is also true that idiots can pass. They may even have an easier time passing. And they may be the first to feel smart and superior during their studies because of the effect mentioned above.
So anyone with a degree may be smart or idiotic. Their ability to demonstrate the behaviour outlined above has nothing to do with it.

I believe universities are very important to the function of civilization. I do not have a college degree but have achieved success working at a level alongside professional who do have degrees.

Even then, while I value self-education and have something to show for it, I still understand that not everything can be self-taught and that society needs universities to function.

Medicine is a good example of this. We need thoroughly vetted and tested doctors in a system of formal accreditation for the sake of public health and safety.

As for OP's self-deprecating claims, repetition is the key to memorization and if you simply stop accessing certain knowledge then it can be easy to forget.

Its so over for me, havent even been able to start my professional career either. My lack of IQ points has put me in a position where I pretend im smarter than I am.

>>16720234
I unfortunately agree with you on every point. Some things in chem other than physical and inorganic, I never understood immediately. It took me hours reading the book for me to finally be confident in my knowledge (which has all but disappeared at this point)

>>16720238
I had to stop because I needed to get a (warehouse) job which didnt require my chem knowledge. It became hard for me to justify doing problems when

A. I dont have a need for it at this time
B. I picked up other projects related to rf signals

I have to agree with the anon youre responding to. I believe I was just an idiot led on to believe hes smart because I understood how to solve problems and not understand the concepts of the problem.

if you haven't been doing it for years then don't expect it to come back in a click, you probably need to sit back at a textbook for a month and you get back it
