Prions are fucked up.

Plants use them to signal and they are pretty interesting.

Remove the protein from your brain and you get significantly dumber. It's used to remidiate copper and can be turned into all sorts of strange things.

The thing responsible for our higher cognition by introducing a very lethal penalty for cannibalism.
Without it you'd be like the dumb fuck in this picture, a mouth on legs that can't tell if the thing in front of him is meant for fucking or for eating. You take this ability for granted but remember that you had to evolve it from nothing, and there's more moving parts to it than you appreciate.
Every mammal species has its variant of PRNP, and genetically distant species are generally immune to one another's PrP(sc) due to the differences in structure. This acts as a "species ID" gene that kills you if you ingest its byproduct, creating strong evolutionary pressure to recognize and avoid eating your own kin, which resulted in mammal cognition evolving rapidly to match.
