When you write or do papers (which, lol) what's your approach to reading literature about it? Do you start from the earliest sources and reach the most recent ones? Do you ask your professor for an overview? Do you just put the first thing that shows up on google?

My professors are so fucking retarded they want a research paper made in the past 5 years. But every single paper in the past 5 years is either about covid or gender disparities and it makes me want to blow my head off whenever I need to find a relevant paper for my topic. I just have to surf through google scholar and jstor until I find one that is semi-relevant.

I feel like the old papers are good enough it shouldn't be hard to convince your professors to drop their stupid rule, unless you're just actively avoiding stuff out of being needlessly conservative. In which case, your professors are just doing this to spite you.

How reliable is this, and are you being paid to say this?

Oh, the joys of a niche field, they don't make it like this anymore.

If you want to no the truth, then I have no clue how reliable it is. If you want literature/citations to support your argument in a paper you're writing, then it can be quite useful. I wish I was getting paid lmao

part of research is making yourself relevant to the existing field. you do this by inserting yourself into contemporary conversations by citing recent papers. it gives your paper better visibility, and boosts papers you cite as well.
if you are citing things from textbooks and articles 50+ years old, there's a good chance you are citing things that don't really need a citation anymore.

nta but I've found it fairly reliable. if they sponsored me I'd be happy to take the money, but sadly I'm just a consumer of their product that wants them to be popular

The solution is simple, just get autistic about a specific thing and stick with it
had a prof with a phd in cyclopentadiene complexes of transition metals. One of the best profs I ever had.

I already have a body of literature in mind so I start with what is most relevant. if it's generally new to me though I will look for reviews or primers made in the last 5 years to start with and then explore recent research. I don't touch the seminal works until later.

If you missed any "important" ones then some faggot will let you know when you dump it on the arxiv, don't worry.

Anon, Ferrocene was over half of inorganic chemistry for many decades and aromatic pi coordination is still extremely relevant today.

I'm a web dev, as you can guess we do too have to do "research" and keep notes.
I know how to db, excel and all that jazz. But my actual notes with info are kept in .txt files that contain blocks of info, the related blocks of info are merely grouped one after the other. every block of info has a header that contains tags. so when I open the .txt and ctrl f I can search by tags easily

thats pretty cool, do you keeps your tags in a separate list? or at the top of the page? Also do you use a plain text editor? vscodium lags after 5000 characters
