This is a real problem that shows up in engineering all the time.
I literally had to help debug this problem this week: > Engineer 1 creates system 1 to convert and use epoch in ms, and engineer 2 uses system 1 in system 2 which needs epoch in us, and can't figure out why system 2 is failing
>>16741552 (OP) you joke, but this is the reason I failed the last subject on my college degree. I have to retake it this year

>>16741582 It happens even in big, expensive projects. The Mars Climate Orbiter crashed because someone wrote part of the fuel control code assuming Imperial Units, despite the fact the entire system was Metric based.
>>16741552 (OP) He's completely right. Dimensional analysis is an important part of applying math to real-world situations, and failing to account for units has caused significant fuck-ups in the past

>>16741562 >The units on what? The OP wrote: "If you don't put the unit on the test, I WILL mark you down" He wrote "unit" instead of units. In other words, I corrected him, by using square brackets. Square brackets denote alteration.
He also didn't put either a period, or an exclamation mark, at the end of that sentence.
>>16741582 >This is a real problem that shows up in engineering all the time. The thing is that everybody knows it's an annoying but necessary evil when dealing with real world applications. But what I find shocking is that students don't care about units. Like half of your formulas in an introductory or applied course can be derived by checking the units. Half of the remaining half just has some constants in the formula. It makes most classes trivial desu.
>>16741770 can't speak for every school/program but we spent half a semester in my Engg 201 course getting dimensional analysis drilled into us for exactly this reason
