so far, particle physicists have been pretty consistently delivering results with that money they're getting, so it would be money well spent, even if they don't find this one particular particle.
there's more to the universe than dark matter, and there are more applications to particle physics than understanding distant phenomena in space.
if you're worried about your favorite field not getting the funding it needs, maybe get mad at the cuts from the government or the disproportionate waste of funds on things like the military industrial complex, or whatever surveillance bullshit the actual sam altman is currently deploying in datacenters funded by black budget contracts.
the government put $300B into "AI" earlier this year and has simultaneously cut funds for scientific research across all fields.
