Actual question for the psychiatry/psychology fags in here, is there a term for when a person so desperately wants a specific psych diagnosis and the “perks” that come with it that they start convincing themselves they do in fact have the disorder, and they go from consciously to eventually unconsciously emulating/manifesting the psych symptoms? To the point that their presentation is indistinguishable from the diagnosis they desire (like telling a lie so often you start believing it). Do we just call it a day and treat what we see anyway? I understand this unconscious stuff might fall under conversion disorders but those seem to only ever refer to fake physical neurological symptoms like being unable to walk. Or is this line essentially impossible to draw because there’s no realistic way to know what info/intentions someone is withholding

Nursing homes are typically considered one of the worst settings to work in as a nurse. You're likely going to be asked to do tasks for way more patients than is safe or sustainable while still having to chart all of your care. This is on top of all the other baggage in nursing homes. There are quite a few comfy jobs in nursing, but bear in mind that it is fundamentally a 'customer service' job compared to trucking.

Do you have a bachelor's degree? If not, you can go to Western Governors University (it's the only online university that ISN'T for-profit because it's a state public university) and get a bachelor's degree in 6 months using life experience. Get the bachelor's degree in whatever subject you can apply the most life experience credit hours towards. By the time you graduate you should only owe like $2-4k at the very most.

Next take a 1 year/18 month direct-entry online DNP program. As long as you have a bachelor's degree you are eligible. I know a woman who has a bachelor's degree in theology who is an NP through this because they take any major. The acceptance rate is 100% and the coursework is easy. You would think it shouldn't be, but DNP programs exist to make money for the school. They will let anyone in, regardless of if you have ever spent any amount of time in a clinical setting as anything but a patient. Once you graduate from the DNP program you will have an academic doctorate and you will be eligible to practice in any state as a Nurse Practitioner, salaries starting at $130k. Some states let you practice without doctor supervision, other states make you practice under it. Personally I would rather you work under a doctor because you will have had zero hands-on experience. Depending on where you work you can easily clear $200k a year. It sounds stupid but the system is so fucking broken this is all you have to do. The only thing to worry about is that nurses may not like you because you entered the profession being paid more than them despite having no experience but believe me that hasn't stopped anyone in your shoes before.

In some states you are allowed to do surgery and prescribe medication with these credentials. I didn't say that was a good thing for the patients.

I was put in mental hospital against my will. That's what got me into this shitty situation of psych drugs. I've tried stopping my psych drugs but then I get shitty withdrawals. I can try and just push through them but I think that will take a couple of months, at least, until I'm back to normal (some years ago I stopped a psych drug after a few months and I was pretty inactive for at least a couple months before I was back to normal).

Other people seem to have difficulty coming off psych drugs too. There's an online forum called Surviving Antidepressants where people talk about this. They recommend reducing your dose very slowly over time, because sudden reductions in dose can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Correct. If we're going to be charitable we can say that psych meds do produce psychoactive effects, and some patients find those effects helpful. But psych meds also have negative effects, and I doubt that medicine fully appreciates the extent of these negative effects. More research always needs to be done. At the very least, patients should have a choice regarding whether they take these strong drugs.

Did you know that antipsychotic drugs can cause a condition called tardive dyskinesia? This condition causes the patient to experience involuntary movements of the face - pic related. Apparently the condition can become permanent, even if the patient stops taking antipsychotic drugs. More info here:

The problem is that psychiatrists decide whether a patient "endangers" others, and psychiatrists have every incentive to be heavy-handed. There might be a patient who has never shown any signs of violence but maybe they're just distressed. The psychiatrist thinks "there's only a small chance this person could become violent, but if they do become violent, I'll get in trouble for not 'treating' them, so I better lock them up and drug them, just in case".

Because psych patients can be forcibly drugged, on the basis that it's supposedly in their interest. If we do that, then we might as well forcibly feed people vegetables, again on the basis that it's supposedly in their interest. In reality we DON'T force feed vegetables to people because we recognise that it's inhumane.

Perhaps if a drug is the only possible way to relieve someone's bad mental state then it might be warranted but I think in that case there should be efforts to help that patient make an informed choice as soon as possible. I have seen mental patients who ended up in hospital for many months, being drugged over and over again, and they didn't want it. It didn't seem to help them.

I think this line of thinking is bullshit. I've seen patients in mental hospital who were certainly distressed, but they were still in touch with the world around them. Some doctor will say this person can't make decisions about themselves. Maybe we should help that patient to figure out and understand what is causing them distress, instead of just treating them like an object that we should drug.
