>— After you announced your retirement, there were some harsh opinions regarding your title challenge.
>Hasegawa: Yes, I was told things like, “Don’t challenge for the belt just to make memories before retirement,” and “What do you think the belt is?” I’ve always been the type to attract those kinds of comments for some reason…
>— You received similar criticism back when you first appeared on the documentary show The Nonfiction, which led to your debut, correct?
>Hasegawa: Oh, it was full of haters. Like, literally one minute after the broadcast started, people were saying “Die” and such… I was crying all the time back then, so people said all kinds of things. I had my DMs open at the time, and they were awful. It didn’t stop buzzing for about a week.
>— That must have been an intense experience…
>Hasegawa: But thanks to that, I really toughened up mentally. I got so much hate that I completely shut off my emotions once. If I took in every single word, I knew I would break down, so I started seeing both good and bad words as just random strings of letters, like “A, I, U, E, O,” and blocked them from my heart.
>— When did you tell your family about your retirement?
>Hasegawa: I contacted them right before I made the official announcement. My dad came to my debut match, but he never came to a show after that. He kept telling me to quit pro wrestling.
>— I imagine he was especially worried when you had that serious injury.
>Hasegawa: Actually, I never told my dad that I broke my neck.
>— You didn’t?
>Hasegawa: Yeah. I knew it would be a huge fuss if I told him. My dad doesn’t use social media, so I don’t think he even knows to this day… He often tells me, “Be careful not to get hurt,” though (laughs). I told him I want him to come to my retirement event, but he’s really hesitant.
