Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem in 1890
This beautiful church is located on the slope of the Mount of Olives in the Garden of Gethsemane, overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem. Built in 1888 by Russian Tsar Alexander III and his brothers as a memorial to Empress Maria Alexandrovna, the church is built in the Russian church style with golden onion-shaped domes. The renowned Russian artist Sergei Ivanov (1864–1910) was commissioned to paint the monumental murals depicting the life of Saint Mary Magdalene. The murals were brought and hung in the church to commemorate Mary Magdalene.
